This tool was a real poser. I had never seen anything like it before. When it came up as an "eraser" it seemed a little hard to believe. But yes - it is true - it is an ink eraser. In the past paper and vellum were much thicker than most paper today. If you made a mistake with your quill halfway through a long document how would you deal with it. You needed an "ink eraser" the idea is that you can shave off the top layer of the paper still leaving enough to write on. Why it is this strange shape I cannot say. There is an edge on both sides of the blade and i have honed it although I think it unlikely it will ever be used for the purpose for which it was designed. I have cleaned most of the grime and tarnish off it revealing that it was made in Sheffield. I am pretty certain that the handle is Ebony - it is not plastic or bone and although it is black a grain can just be made out. This is a genuine antique.
