This literature-connected art lesson teaches the concept of art as a method of communication. Students are introduced to the concept of portraits done in three-quarter view in a simple but creative way. The lesson is introduced with a read aloud and an activity for generating ideas for creating expressive faces. Students learn helpful collage techniques and assess their personal creative process.This lesson includes the following:- list of art concepts and skills addressed- national visual arts standards information- a list of materials needed- targeted art and related vocabulary- suggestion for related read aloud- detailed steps for introducing the lesson- directions for art-making- ideas for extending or varying the lesson- ideas for looking at and discussing student art- suggestions for writing extensions- photographs of student art work for referenceAlso included in this resource:• helpful tips for creating successful collages• samples of expressive face ideas• an art reflection worksheet designed to help students assess their own art work• three versions of a ‘draw and write’ literature response worksheet.
