rica%26rsquo%3Bs%20first%20nine%20presidents%20%26ndash%3B%20George%20Washington%20through%20William%20Henry%20Harrison.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20sheet%20is%20shown%20on%20a%20large%20First%20Day%20Cover%2C%20bearing%20the%20issue%20date%2C%20May%2022%2C%201986.%26nbsp%3B%20Not%20only%20was%20this%20the%20first%20time%20a%20US%20stamp%20pictured%20stamps%20that%20hadn%26rsquo%3Bt%20been%20issued%20yet%2C%20it%20also%20showed%20a%20First%20Day%20Cover%20that%20didn%26rsquo%3Bt%20exist%20yet!%26nbsp%3B%20Also%20shown%20on%20the%20stamp%20is%20the%20Martin%20Van%20Buren%20stamp%20from%20the%20sheet%20on%20a%20cover%20and%20a%20handstamp%20canceler.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20first%20stamp%20in%20the%20Sweden%20booklet%20pictures%20that%20nation%26rsquo%3Bs%20%26ldquo%3Btretio%26rdquo%3B%20error%2C%20in%20which%20the%20numeral%20read%2020%20but%20the%20lettering%20said%2030%20krona.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20second%20stamp%20pictures%20Sven%20Ewert%2C%20who%20engraved%20most%20of%20Sweden%26rsquo%3Bs%20stamps%20between%201928%20and%20the%20late%201950s.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20third%20stamp%20is%20similar%20(but%20not%20identical)%20to%20the%20third%20stamp%20in%20the%20US%20issue.%26nbsp%3B%20And%20the%20fourth%20stamp%20pictures%20a%20young%20boy%20soaking%20stamps%20for%20his%20collection.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AAbout%20the%20printing%20process%3A%26nbsp%3B%20At%20the%20same%20time%20talks%20about%20the%20joint%20issue%20with%20Sweden%20were%20going%20on%2C%20US%20postal%20authorities%20had%20begun%20discussing%20issuing%20their%20first%20commemorative%20booklet.%26nbsp%3B%20So%2C%20both%20ideas%20were%20combined%20and%20by%20November%201984%2C%20the%20US%20and%20Sweden%20began%20looking%20into%20the%20technical%20requirements%20of%20a%20joint%20booklet%20honoring%20stamp%20collecting.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AUS%20officials%20knew%20printing%20would%20be%20a%20challenge%20for%20this%20design.%20For%20several%20years%2C%20the%20Bureau%20of%20Engraving%20and%20Printing%20(BEP)%20had%20been%20experimenting%20with%20the%20D%20Press%2C%20which%20combined%20both%20intaglio%20and%20offset%20printing.%20For%20intaglio%20printing%2C%20an%20image%20is%20etched%20or%20engraved%20on%20a%20metal%20plate%2C%20covered%20with%20ink%20and%20then%20pressed%20onto%20the%20paper.%20With%20offset%20printing%2C%20the%20image%20is%20created%20on%20a%20plate%2C%20transferred%20to%20a%20rubber%20blanket%20and%20then%20printed%20on%20paper.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0ABecause%20the%20D%20Press%20combined%20these%20two%20techniques%2C%20many%20of%20the%20early%20stamps%20printed%20on%20it%20had%20colors%20that%20were%20not%20lined%20up.%20However%2C%20the%20printing%20of%20the%20Stamp%20Collecting%20pane%2C%20America%26rsquo%3Bs%20first%20commemorative%20booklet%2C%20was%20described%20as%20%26ldquo%3Bthe%20finest%2C%20most%20complex%20printing%20job%20to%20come%20out%20of%20the%20Bureau%26rdquo%3B%20in%20years.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AFirst%20Day%20City%3A%26nbsp%3B%20On%20January%2023%2C%201986%2C%20the%20US%20and%20Sweden%20booklets%20were%20simultaneously%20issued%20in%20Stockholm%2C%20Sweden%2C%20and%20State%20College%2C%20Pennsylvania.%20US%20representatives%20attended%20the%20Stockholm%20ceremony%20and%20Swedish%20representatives%20participated%20in%20the%20Pennsylvania%20ceremony.%26nbsp%3B%20During%20the%20ceremonies%2C%20one%20US%20representative%20stated%2C%20%26ldquo%3BWe%20have%20so%20admired%20Swedish%20stamps%20that%20we%20used%20new%20equipment%2C%20new%20techniques%20and%20new%20dedication%20to%20attempt%20to%20give%20our%20stamps%20%26lsquo%3Ba%20Swedish%20look.%26rsquo%3B%26rdquo%3B%26nbsp%3B%20The%20US%20stamp%20booklets%20were%20only%20available%20for%20sale%20for%2060%20to%2090%20days.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AUnusual%20fact%20about%20these%20stamps%3A%26nbsp%3B%20Shortly%20after%20the%20stamps%20were%20released%2C%20a%20collector%20in%20Pennsylvania%20discovered%20an%20error%20%26ndash%3B%20the%20black%20ink%20was%20missing%20from%20the%20first%20and%20last%20stamps.%26nbsp%3B%20In%20the%20first%20stamp%2C%20the%20cancel%20and%20postmark%20did%20not%20print%20and%20the%20AMERIPEX%20cancel%20beneath%20the%20reproduction%20of%20the%20Presidents%20miniature%20sheet%20is%20missing.%26nbsp%3B%20Once%20he%20realized%20the%20error%2C%20he%20rushed%20back%20to%20his%20local%20post%20office%20to%20buy%2026%20more%20of%20the%20error%20booklets.%20When%20the%20error%20was%20announced%2C%20the%20individual%20panes%20were%20sold%20for%20as%20much%20as%20%24500!%0A%26nbsp%3B%0ALittle%20is%20known%20about%20the%20cause%20of%20the%20Stamp%20Collecting%20Error.%20Most%20likely%2C%20either%20the%20ink%20was%20forgotten%20or%20simply%20ran%20out.%20About%2068%20million%20Stamp%20Collecting%20booklets%20were%20produced%2C%20but%20stamp%20experts%20believe%20just%20a%20few%20thousand%20were%20printed%20with%20black%20ink%20omitted.%20And%20likely%20many%20were%20used%20as%20postage%20before%20the%20error%20was%20discovered%2C%20adding%20to%20their%20scarcity%20today.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AHistory%20the%20stamps%20represent%3A%26nbsp%3B%20On%20September%2013%2C%201886%2C%20a%20group%20of%20stamp%20collectors%20met%20in%20New%20York%20City%20to%20establish%20what%20would%20become%20the%20American%20Philatelic%20Society.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AAfter%20the%20first%20official%20U.S.%20postage%20stamps%20were%20issued%20in%201847%2C%20a%20small%20group%20of%20people%20began%20saving%20these%20relics%2C%20recognizing%20the%20history%20they%20represented.%20Over%20time%2C%20more%20and%20more%20people%20became%20stamp%20collectors%2C%20reaching%20about%2025%2C000%20collectors%20in%20the%201880s.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%201886%2C%20a%20group%20of%20prominent%20philatelists%20met%20and%20began%20talking%20about%20the%20possibility%20of%20forming%20a%20national%20organization%20of%20collectors.%20That%20April%2C%20they%20formed%20The%20Committee%20on%20National%20Organization%20and%20printed%20an%20announcement%20calling%20for%20interested%20collectors%20to%20write%20in%20and%20see%20if%20they%20would%20want%20to%20join%20such%20an%20organization.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AEventually%2C%20about%20400%20collectors%20answered%20the%20advertisement%2C%20agreeing%20to%20assist%20in%20creating%20the%20organization.%20A%20few%20months%20later%2C%2040%20interested%20collectors%20met%20in%20New%20York%20City%20on%20September%2013.%20As%26nbsp%3BThe%20American%20Philatelist%26nbsp%3Blater%20noted%2C%20%26ldquo%3BWhen%20one%20considers%20the%20distances%20involved%20and%20the%20means%20of%20transportation%20available%20at%20the%20time%2C%20to%20have%20attracted%20that%20many%20participants%20is%20no%20small%20indication%20of%20interest%20in%20the%20formation%20of%20a%20national%20organization.%26rdquo%3B%20The%20attendees%20selected%20a%20committee%20and%20chose%20the%20name%20American%20Philatelic%20Association.%20That%20day%20also%20marked%20the%20very%20first%20annual%20convention%2C%20known%20today%20as%20StampShow.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AThe%20following%20day%20the%20committee%20selected%20John%20K.%20Tiffany%20as%20their%20first%20president.%20They%20also%20adopted%20a%20constitution%20and%20bylaws.%20Members%20would%20pay%20%242%20per%20year%20in%20exchange%20for%20several%20convenient%20services.%20They%20had%20a%20purchasing%20department%20that%20worked%20to%20provide%20older%20issues%20for%20face%20value%2C%20an%20exchange%20department%20to%20trade%20in%20duplicate%20stamps%2C%20a%20library%20department%2C%20and%20a%20counterfeit%20department%20to%20identify%20fraudulent%20stamps.%0A%26nbsp%3B%0AIn%201897%2C%20the%20group%20briefly%20changed%20their%20name%20to%20the%20American%20Philatelic%20Society%2C%20but%20quickly%20changed%20it%20back%20within%20a%20few%20months.%20They%20changed%20the%20name%20again%20in%201908%20and%20it%20has%20remained%20the%20American%20Philatelic%20Society%20since%20then.%20Today%20the%20APS%20is%20the%20largest%20nonprofit%20stamp%20collecting%20organization%20with%20over%2028%2C000%20members.
